I am a certificated secondary mathematics teacher and have taught Algebra I and Algebra II in the classroom for two years. My main goal for students is to develop both the conceptual understanding and procedural fluency to tackle any mathematical problem with confidence. I like to teach math by simplifying complex ideas and connecting those ideas to students’ prior knowledge. Mathematical concepts, including more abstract ideas, should be linked to real-life examples, analogies, drawings, and images to engage students and help them make sense of the concept.
To supplement my classroom teaching, I coordinated an after-school tutoring program at the high school where I was employed. This program provided additional individual and small group support for students who were struggling. Small groups and one-on-one sessions were particularly rewarding because I could tailor my lessons to target the specific educational needs of the students. This small, targeted learning environment was optimal for developing deep understanding of concepts and often lead to the ‘Eureka’ moment, equally satisfying for the teacher and the student.
